Some symptoms of depression:
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Too much sleep, or insomnia
  • Inability to enjoy activities that as usually enjoyable
  • Lack of concentration and/or memory
  • Increased use of substances e.g. alcohol, medications etc
  • Feelings of hopelessness and uselessness
  • Over eating, or eating very little
  • Weight gain, or weight loss
  • Feelings of wanting to withdraw from others
  • Significant changes in personality (e.g. increased anger; crying)
  • In its worst case, suicidal thoughts and/or behavior
Some symptoms of mania:
  • Highly agitated
  • Confused
  • Abuse of substances e.g. drugs, alcohol, medications etc
  • Restlessness
  • Unrealistic thinking e.g. “I can be the next Oprah!” or “I am invincible and bullet proof”
  • Inappropriate behavior e.g. promiscuity whilst married; swearing amongst young children
  • Loud, and fast talking
  • Short term memory loss
  • Agitated behavior e.g. nail biting; picking at skin; can’t sit still etc
  • Excessive behaviours like binge eating; binge drinking; spending too much money etc
